The Time Is Far Spent | Le temps est très court

My time to write this week is extremely limited. I simply wish to bear witness to you that Jesus is the Christ. I have no doubt that He lived a perfect, sinless life and bore the cost of our imperfection to atone for our weakness and our shortcomings. He suffered, died and rose again the third day and is our very Master, Lord and Redeemer. Turn to Him. His love will never fail you. Brothers and sisters, I love you and pray for you each day.

Le temps que j'ai pour écrire cette semaine est extrêmement limité. Je souhaite simplement vous témoigner que Jésus est le Christ. Je n'ai aucun doute qu'Il a vécu une vie parfaite et sans péché et a porté le coût de notre imperfection pour expier pour notre faiblesse et nos erreurs. Il a souffert, est mort et s'est levé de nouveau le troisième jour et est notre Maître, Seigneur et Rédempteur. Tournez-vous vers Lui. Son amour ne vous fera jamais défaut. Frères et soeurs, je vous aime et je prie pour vous à tous les jours.

Be Ye Separate | Soyez séparés

I only have a little time to write this week so I'd like to share a verse with you that I read from the The Book of Mormon this week.

"And now I say unto you, all you that are desirous to follow the voice of the good shepherd, come ye out from the wicked, and be ye separate, and touch not their unclean things; and behold, their names shall be blotted out, that the names of the wicked shall not be numbered among the names of the righteous, that the word of God may be fulfilled, which saith: The names of the wicked shall not be mingled with the names of my people" (Alma 5:57)

What does it mean to "be... separate"?

Let's look more closely at the words that Alma uses: "come ye out from the wicked, and be ye separate". 

I believe, after my study of the scriptures, and along with my prayers to really understand The Book of Mormon, that to come out from the wicked is not makes us "separate" in Alma's eyes. I think that a good part of our understanding of what it means to "be separate" rests on our understanding our the word "be". To "be separate" implies that we must be something.

I testify to you that Alma would not suggest to all those who seek to follow the example of Jesus Christ to join some sort of secluded society for perfect individuals. No, the Lord wishes that we be separated from sin by our actions and thoughts.

It's interesting as well to note the words of the Lord in these last days: "Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen." (D&C 87:8)

Brothers and sisters, an increased amount of peace and happiness await us and will be our reward if we accept to rid ourselves of all ungodliness. That's my promise and my testimony.

Je n'ai que peu de temps pour écrire cette semaine, alors je souhaite partager avec vous un verset que j'ai lu dans le Livre de Mormon cette semaine.

«Et maintenant, je vous dis, à vous tous qui désirez suivre la voix du bon Berger, sortez d’entre les méchants, et soyez séparés» (Alma 5:57)

Qu'est-ce que cela signifie que d'«être séparés»?

Notons les mots utilisés par Alma: «sortez d'entre les méchants et soyez séparés».

Je crois, à la suite de mon étude des Écritures, et au fil de mes prières pour bien comprendre le Livre de Mormon, que de sortir d'entre les méchants n'est pas ce que le fait d'«être séparés» signifie au yeux d'Alma. Je crois qu'une bonne partie de notre compréhension de ce que c'est que d'«être séparés» repose sur notre compréhension du mot «être». «Être séparés» implique que nous devons «être» quelque chose. 

Je vous témoigne qu'Alma ne suggérait pas que tous ceux qui cherchent à suivre l'exemple de Jésus-Christ s'unissent en une sorte de société sécluse pour individus parfaits. Le Seigneur souhaite que nous soyons séparés du péché par notre conduite et par nos pensées. 

Notons aussi les paroles du Seigneur en ces derniers jours: «tenez-vous en des lieux saints et ne vous laissez pas ébranler» (D&A 87:8)

Frères et soeurs, une paix et un bonheur accrus nous attendent et seront notre bénédiction si nous acceptons de nous dépouiller de toute impiété. C'est ma promesse et mon témoignage.

Mosiah 5:2

I strongly feel that we, as recipients of the grace of Jesus Christ, are indebted to Him. We must pay some form of price for the precious gift of eternal life, which He has bestowed upon us on conditions of repentance. While the Lord has already marked the path and paid the cost of our salvation, we must follow His teachings, keep His commandments and endure to the end to obtain a place in His kingdom.

It appears to me that the challenge of enduring to the end lies, in great part at least, in the amount of time that actually separates us from the end. Will we hold on faithful? Will we demonstrate fittingly righteous conduct? Will we show forth an adequately broken heart and contrite spirit? 

Speaking of this continuous pursuit for faithfulness, Nephi said that "ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life." (2 Nephi 31:20)

Brothers and sisters, we cannot "press forward" only sometimes, neither can we have a "perfect brightness of hope", let alone a "love of God and of all men" only every now and then. The work of enduring to the end is a work of consistency, and repentance helps us get back up when we stumble and fall along the way. 

Let us turn to God and not turn back. Let us show forth a broken heart and a contrite spirit, a disposition to do good continually. As we approach God in meekness, keeping His commandments with all diligence, He will bless us with His Spirit, and we will live happy days.

J'ai la forte impression qu'en tant que récipiendaires de la grâce de Jésus-Christ, nous Lui sommes endettés. Nous devons payer un certain prix pour le cadeau précieux de la vie éternelle, qu'Il nous a offert selon notre repentir. Bien que le Seigneur a déjà tracé le chemin et payé le prix de notre salut, nous devons suivre Ses enseignements, garder Ses commandments et persévérer jusqu'à la fin pour obtenir une place dans Son royaume.

Il me semble que le défi dans le fait de perséverer jusqu'à la fin repose, en grande partie du moins, dans la quantité de temps qui nous sépare de la fin. Demeurerons-nous fidèles? Démontrerons-nous une conduite suffisament juste? Présenterons-nous un coeur adéquatement brisé, et un esprit acceptablement contrit?

En parlant de cette quête continuelle de la fidélité, Néphi a dit que «vous devez marcher résolument, avec constance dans le Christ, ayant une espérance d’une pureté parfaite et l’amour de Dieu et de tous les hommes; c’est pourquoi, si vous marchez résolument, vous faisant un festin de la parole du Christ, et persévérez jusqu’à la fin, voici, ainsi dit le Père: Vous aurez la vie éternelle.» (2 Néphi 31:20)

Frères et soeurs, nous ne pouvons pas «marcher résolument» seulement parfois, et nous ne pouvons pas non plus avoir une «espérance d’une pureté parfaite», et encore moins un «amour de Dieu et de tous les hommes» seulement de temps en temps. L'oeuvre de la persévérance jusqu'à la fin est une oeuvre de constance, et le repentir nous aide à nous relever lorsque nous trébuchons et tombons en chemin.

Tournons-nous vers Dieu, et ne nous retournons pas. Démontrons un coeur brisé et un esprit contrit, une disposition à faire le bien continuellement. En nous approchant de Dieu en douceur, en gardant Ses commandments en toute diligence, Il nous bénira de Son Esprit, et nous vivrons des jours heureux.

Making and keeping covenants | Contracter et garder des alliances

I can hardly believe that I got to the Yorktown area a month ago already!

This week, as I pondered the changes to my motives and perspective which have taken place since I began my mission, I realized that the things which I have learned up to now gravitate around an increased understanding of my missionary purpose, which is to "invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end." (Preach My Gospel, p.1)

We have it as our goal to invite people to have faith in Jesus Christ, repent, be baptized, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and endure to the end. Our objective is therefore not solely to invite and help people to come unto Christ, but specifically to help them make and keep covenants with the Lord.

I far better understand my role as a missionary now that I understand that crucial distinction. What makes the exclusiveness of our calling is that we are commissioned to help people along certains steps to their spiritual progression. Along with this calling also comes the capacity to teach and testify with power to help people come unto Christ by making those very steps.

I frequently see sons and daughters of God accept to come closer to Him by committing to one or another of those steps, and it is becoming increasingly clear to me that all principles of the Gospel, be it faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost or enduring to the end, are given us to help us change. When we apply them in our lives, they enable us to become better individuals and to better know God and to experience His love more fully and more personally.

I love the doctrine of Christ. It has changed my life and my heart and it continues to change them on a daily basis as I strive to faithfully apply the principles of the Gospel. I promise you that you will feel increased joy if you will search the Scriptures with faith and center your life on the doctrine of Christ. Do these things and then watch as the hand of the Lord transforms and molds you.

J'ai peine à croire que je suis arrivé dans le quartier de Yorktown il y a un mois déjà!

Cette semaine, en réfléchissant à ce qui a changé concernant mes motivations et ma perspective depuis le début de ma mission, j'ai constaté que l'ensemble de mes apprentissages gravitent autour d'une compréhension accrue de mon but en tant que missionnaire, qui est d'«inviter les gens à aller au Christ en les aidant à recevoir l’Évangile rétabli par la foi en Jésus-Christ et en son expiation, par le repentir, par le baptême, par la réception du don du Saint-Esprit et par la persévérance jusqu’à la fin." (Prêchez mon Évangile, p. 1)

Nous avons pour but d'aider les gens à avoir foi en Jésus-Christ, à se repentir, à être baptisés, à recevoir le don du Saint-Esprit et à persévérer jusqu'à la fin. Notre objectif n'est donc pas que d'inviter et aider les gens à aller au Christ, mais spécifiquement de les aider à contracter des alliances avec le Seigneur et à les garder.

Je comprends beaucoup mieux mon rôle en tant que missionnaire depuis que j'ai saisi cette distinction cruciale. Ce qui fait l'exclusivité du pouvoir de notre appel, c'est que nous sommes chargés d'aider les gens à franchir certaines étapes spécifiques de leur progression spirituelle. Avec cet appel vient également le pouvoir et la capacité d'enseigner et de témoigner avec puissance afin d'aider les gens à aller au Christ en franchissant ces mêmes étapes.

Je vois couramment des fils et des filles de Dieu accepter de s'approcher de Lui en s'engageant à franchir l'une ou l'autre de ces étapes, et il m'est de plus en plus clair que tous les principes de l'Évangile, que ce soit la foi, le repentir, le baptême, la réception du don du Saint-Esprit ou la persévérance jusqu'à la fin, nous sont donnés pour nous aider à changer. Ils nous permettent, lorsque nous les mettons en application dans nos vies, de devenir de meilleures personnes et de mieux connaître Dieu et ressentir Son amour plus pleinement et plus personnellement.

J'aime la doctrine du Christ. Elle a changé ma vie et mon coeur même et continue de les métamorphoser de jour en jour tandis que je m'efforce d'appliquer avec fidélité les principes de l'Évangile. Je vous promets une joie accrue si vous sondez les Écritures avec foi et centrez votre vie sur la doctrine du Christ. Faites ces choses et observez la main du Seigneur vous transformer et vous façonner.
