Obedience | L'obéissance

Something seems increasingly obvious to me as I am learning more about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and that is that this Gospel is not a Gospel of beliefs. It is a Gospel of action. I wish to with you a passage from the Book of Mormon which has made me think a lot earlier this week:

"And it came to pass that the Lord commanded my father, even in a dream, that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness. And it came to pass that he was obedient unto the word of the Lord, wherefore he did as the Lord commanded him." (1 Nephi 2:3)

I would like to draw your attention to three particular words in this sentence.

"wherefore he did"

When we are obedient to the commandments of the Lord, we do as He commands. That's pretty straightforward, right? It is not sufficient to want to obey, and it is not sufficient to wish to improve. We obey and improve by obeying and improving. I, however, wish to be clear: our becoming perfect will not happen overnight or in the snap of the fingers, but the Savior has expressed that He wishes for it to happen.

"Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect." (3 Nephi 12:48)

The Lord wants us to be perfect, and we, by our imperfect decisions and desires, fail to reach that expectation. That is why He has given His life for us in an act of a generosity and influence of unmatched magnitude.

I wish to bear to you my testimony of what took place in the garden of Gethsemane and at the summit of Calvary. I am entirely certain that the Savior Jesus Christ bore the burden of our individual shortcomings, of our weaknesses, of our impure desires and of our imperfect minds. He bled at every pore and experienced a suffering we cannot even fathom so that we could have the possibility of living with He and our Heavenly Father again.

What He asks of us is that we repent and utilize that unspeakable gift, even that of the giving of His life in an infinite and perfect Atonement. He wants us to live with Him for all eternity in a state of endless happiness.

Come unto Christ. He is calling.

Une chose me semble de plus en plus flagrante tandis que j'en apprends davantage concernant l'Évangile de Jésus-Christ: cet Évangile n'est pas un Évangile de croyances. C'est un Évangile d'action. J'aimerais partager avec vous un passage du Livre de Mormon qui m'a beaucoup fait réfléchir plusieurs tot cette semaine:

«Et il arriva que le Seigneur commanda à mon père, en songe, de prendre sa famille et de partir dans le désert. Et il arriva qu’il fut obéissant à la parole du Seigneur, c’est pourquoi il fit ce que le Seigneur lui commandait.» (1 Néphi 2: 2,3)

J'aimerais attirer votre attention vers trois mots bien particuliers de cette phrase.

«c’est pourquoi il fit»

Si nous sommes obéissants aux commandements du Seigneur, nous faisons ce qu'Il commande. C'est assez simple, non? Il n'est pas suffisant de vouloir obéir, et il n'est pas non plus suffisant de souhaiter s'améliorer. Nous obéissons et nous nous améliorons en obéissant et en nous améliorant. Je souhaite néanmoins être clair: nous ne deviendrons pas parfaits du jour au lendemain où en un claquement de doigts, mais le Sauveur nous a exprimé qu'Il souhaite que nous le devenions.

«C’est pourquoi, je voudrais que vous soyez parfaits tout comme moi, ou comme votre Père qui est dans les cieux est parfait.» (3 Néphi 12: 48)

Le Seigneur veut que nous soyons parfaits, et nous, par nos décisions et désirs imparfaits, ne réussissons pas à atteindre cette exigence. C'est pourquoi Il a donné Sa vie pour nous dans un acte d'une générosité et d'une influence d'une ampleur inégalée.

Je souhaite vous rendre mon témoignage de ce qui s'est passé au jardin de Gethsemane et au sommet du Calvaire. Je suis entièrement certain que le Sauveur Jésus-Christ a porté le fardeau de nos fautes personnelles, de nos faiblesses, de nos désirs impurs et de nos esprits imparfaits. Il a saigné par tous ses pores et a connu une souffrance que nous ne pouvons pas même imaginer afin que nous puissions avoir la possibilité de vivre avec Lui et notre Pere celeste a nouveau.

Ce qu'Il demande de nous est que nous nous repentions et que nous utilisions ce cadeau inexprimable qu'Il nous a fait, celui du don de Sa vie dans une Expiation infinie et parfaite. Il veut que nous vivions avec Lui a toute eternite dans un bonheur sans fin.
